What's the inspiration behind Deanston Bakery?

Arriving in the UK from Ukraine in 2003, Yuriy spent 15 years working in London, where he met his Latvian wife, Lana. 

In search of a better quality of life, and with a young family now in tow, they settled in the southside of Glasgow in 2018.  It was here that Yuriy decided to pursue his growing passion for artisan baking – experimenting with recipes using a small oven installed in their living room.  With a growing demand at local markets, Yuriy set up a home delivery service – but the novelty of baking from home wore thin! 

Yuriy opened the doors to Deanston Bakery in 2019, and the shop has had queues around the block ever since. 

Deanston Bakery showcases some of Yuriy’s Ukrainian culinary heritage, offering bakes such as honey cake or breads with caraway seeds, but its guiding ethos is keeping bakes honest, simple, and committed to using good quality, local ingredients.

What role does Deanston Bakery play in creating a sense of community and belonging?

Yuriy has recently become something of a local legend.  Not just with his artisan sourdough loaves and bagels, but for raising funds from a local bake sale in support of his home country when conflict broke out in 2022.
