Taste the Place - don’t miss:
The pork tonkatsu sando: brined and braised pork belly in panko breadcrumbs, smothered in kewpie mayo and tonkatsu sauce, served up in fluffy bread with shredded cabbage. It’s no wonder it’s a top seller!
What's the inspiration behind Ho Lee Fook?
Born in Scotland to parents from Hong Kong, Johnny and Lee both grew up as “takeaway kids,” watching and helping their parents. Inspired to run their own family business, the pair went on to open the award-winning fish and chip shop, Off the Hook, in 2014.
The next ten years saw the couple build a popular local business, get married (honeymooning in the chippy!), start a family, and survive the pandemic. After a decade of hard graft, the pair decided to change direction and focus on food that better reflected their Southeast Asian heritage.
The couple launched Ho Lee Fook in 2023. A popular addition to the world famous Barras Market and the Glasgow food scene, Johnny and Lee successfully transformed a once unloved corner of MacFarlane Street into a compact, fully functioning kitchen, selling some seriously tasty street food.

What role does Ho Lee Fook play in creating a sense of community and belonging?
Twenty years ago, street food was barely a concept in Scotland but now we are seeing innovative venues, such as Ho Lee Fook, at the forefront of this culinary movement. Sampling street food is a great way to experience lots of foods from all over the world. “There’s certainly a sense that people are more willing to try new tastes and flavours – something that might not have happened a few years ago. We also appreciate the instant feedback from customers, allowing us to make tweaks and additions as we evolve our menu, grow as a business, and better serve the East End community.” Johnny Chung, Ho Lee Fook.

Fun fact – did you know?
Ho Lee Fook means good, wealth and luck… and, well, exactly what you think it means!
