What's the inspiration behind Rickshaw & Co?
Born in Bangladesh, co-owner Tushar set his heart on joining the Bangladeshi Air Force. After failing his eye test, Tushar was suddenly forced to review his career options. Tushar studied Business and Management in Liverpool, before continuing his studies in Glasgow, where he fell in love with its hospitality scene.
In 2017 his dream of opening his own restaurant became a reality, teaming up with friends to open the Raja Rani Restaurant, then launching Rickshaw & Co in 2022. This popular west end venue is inspired by the three friends’ childhood experiences and travels, reflecting the street food of India and Bangladesh. “From roadside rickshaws to local specialities, Rickshaw & Co offers a space where you can soak up the feelings, aromas and flavours from Bombay to Dhaka.” Tushar Ahmed, Rickshaw & Co.

What role does Rickshaw & Co play in creating a sense of community and belonging?
Arriving in Liverpool as a 19-year-old international student, Tushar recounts his first few days in the UK. “Despite being surrounded by people, I found myself feeling quite lonely. Hungry and thinking of my friends back home, I remember searching for something to eat and ending up in an Indian takeaway on the outskirts of town. Prepared for a night in alone, the evening took an unexpected turn when two customers from Bengal went out of their way to make me feel safe and welcomed.” Tushar Ahmed, Rickshaw & Co.
Seeing how people can deeply enrich an experience made a lasting impression on Tushar and went on to inspire his vision for Rickshaw & Co. Today, many of Glasgow’s international students can enjoy the same hospitality, warmth, and sense of belonging that Tushar first experienced when arriving in the UK.

Fun fact – did you know?
In Bangladesh, rickshaw art is listed as ‘intangible heritage’ by UNESCO. Rickshaw & Co’s space is furnished top to toe with vibrant rickshaw canopies and decorative bicycle wheel light fittings.
