What's the inspiration behind Shawarma King?

Arriving from Syria in 2015, Majed settled into a new job, alongside his two brothers, at the newly opened Shawarma King.  Three years in and the opportunity to buy the takeaway gave Majed the chance to take the venture in a new direction.  The result?  The small family business became the recipient of Scotland’s Best Kebab House in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025!

Majed puts the success of the business down to three things: learning to cook from a young age by helping his mother, cooking everything fresh with quality ingredients, and last, but by no means least, teamwork. “It doesn’t matter who’s there. Whether it’s me, my brothers or dad, we all know the business has been left in good hands.” Majed Badrekhan, Shawarma King.

Shoe-horned into a railway arch, a short walk from the city centre and Glasgow Green, there’s no shortage of outdoor spots to enjoy this tasty and affordable on-the-go meal.  For those who’d prefer to sit in, Shawarma King also has a second venue at 232 Paisley Road.

What role does Shawarma King play in creating a sense of community and belonging?

No matter the time of day, youll likely need to queue, as customers travel from as far-flung places as Ayrshire, Aberdeen, and even London to eat here.  Majed is quick to point out that a short wait can lead to unexpected perks, with some customers meeting their future spouses while waiting in the queue.  Tasty food and a life partner, now that is great value!
