The iconic chicken tikka masala, a dish the Shish Mahal claims to have invented, or the maharani daal curry tarka for those who like it spicy!

What's the inspiration behind Shish Mahal?

The Shish Mahal was founded over 60 years ago by young entrepreneur, Ali Ahmed Aslam.  Ali Ahmed Aslan, known as ‘Mr Ali’, moved to Glasgow as a child in 1945.

Mr Ali opened the original Shish Mahal in 1964, working alongside his parents to serve vibrant homemade dishes.  It was his father, Noor Mohammed, who founded what was regarded as the city’s first proper Indian restaurant, Green Gates, in 1959.

To mark the Shish’s 15th birthday in 1979, Mr Ali rolled back menu prices to when the restaurant first opened.  Thanks to his marketing ingenuity, this promotion was widely credited for growing the Glasgow curry movement, giving waves of locals the chance to sample Indian dishes at affordable prices.

Now run by Mr Ali’s son Asif, he’s kept many of his dad’s original dishes on the menu, so you can still enjoy classics served pretty much the same way as they were in 1964.  He’s also broadened the menu, for those looking for more of a modern twist.

What role does Shish Mahal play in creating a sense of community and belonging?

Asif is a fiercely proud Glaswegian and ambassador for the Scottish hospitality sectorHe cites lessons learnt from his father, who taught him that “it didn’t cost you any extra to be kind.”  If someone was unable to pay their bill, in Noor Mohammed’s eyes, “at least they still made an effort to come.”  It’s probably worth noting that many of those customers are now successful entrepreneurs, regular customers, and die-hard Shish fans.
