What's the inspiration behind Suissi Vegan Kitchen?
Aged just 17, Lee Chu Lim arrived in the UK with no English, little cash, and a cassette of her mum singing Malaysian lullabies. Her goal was simply to find work and send money back home to support her family.
After venturing to Glasgow, and finding a job in hospitality, Lee Chu Lim (fondly referred to as Mama Lim) quickly settled in Scotland and started a family of her own. Over time, additional Lim family members moved to Glasgow, forming a support network that enabled her to pursue her long-term ambition of owning her own vegan restaurant.
Run by multiple generations of the Lim family, Suissi Vegan Kitchen’s menu takes inspiration from their Asian roots, creating home-style dishes influenced by flavours from across the continent. Their goal is quite simple, “to make vegan eating effortless and as tasty as possible.” Diners can enjoy a broad menu that includes vegetable gyozas, king trumpet mushroom katsu curry, and their award-winning curry laksa, to mention just a few.
Regularly attracting customers from both the vegan and non-vegan community and ranking 9th out of 100 ‘best vegan restaurants in the world; on Happy Cow, Suissi Vegan Kitchen is fast becoming a must-visit dining destination.

What role does Suissi Vegan Kitchen play in creating a sense of community and belonging?
Less than a year after opening, Covid struck, with Suissi Vegan Kitchen suddenly offering takeaway only. “As a new business, we were really concerned about how we would stay afloat. Thanks to the overwhelming support of the local community, we needn’t have worried. Many who supported us during lockdown are now regulars who mean the world to us.” Yeenzy Lim-Seet, Suissi Vegan Kitchen.
In terms of wider community outreach, Mama Lim regularly gifts her time at Glasgow’s Confucius Temple, working in the kitchen with other volunteers to help cook for the elderly. Suissi’s is also the only fully vegan restaurant in the Glasgow Sustainable Food Directory which tracks the most sustainable businesses in Glasgow.
