What's the inspiration behind The Real Wan?

Moving to Glasgow in 2015, Lea entertained family and friends by cooking food she missed from home in Guiyang, Southwest China.  She turned her passion for street food into a fully-fledged business, The Real Wan, in October 2020, giving her the opportunity to recreate and share a ‘little piece of home’.

In a short space of time, The Real Wan has built a fierce reputation as one of the best examples of authentic Chinese cooking in Scotland.  Introducing locals to the unique flavour profiles of Southwest China, Lea says, “I truly believe that Guiyang food is some of the best in the world, and the greatest way to share that is by making it accessible and affordable to all.”  Lea Wu, The Real Wan.

Using unique ingredients sourced from Guiyang, Lea serves an extensive menu of delicious dishes, from noodles and smoked chilli oils, to fermented chilli sauces and pickled veg.  The flavours are so distinct one customer personally thanked Lea for “recreating the wonderful memories of proposing to my wife over dinner in Southwest China, several decades ago.”

What role does The Real Wan play in creating a sense of community and belonging?

Challenging Glaswegians common perception of spicy foods as a culinary dare, Lea prides herself on sharing dishes that expertly blend spices that customers enjoy, rather than endure.  “I wanted to slowly introduce people to these new foods and flavours.  Sampling new dishes must be one of the best ways to truly understand people’s differing tastes and the ways they might accept and adopt different cultures and cuisines.  Lea Wu, The Real Wan.
